Climate Data Description

Climate data, long term records

Restoration Planning:  These data are potentially useful for determining climatic variables that affect revegetation projects, or projects involving hydrologic factors, such as stream reconstruction projects.

Data Description:  From the Western Regional Climate Center, long term records of temperature and precipitation at an individual station including averages, extremes, snowfall, snow depth, heating degree days and cooling degree days. Period of record data tables for individual stations available.  Information is available for the following stations in the Upper Clark Fork Basin: Butte, Anaconda, East Anaconda, Deer Lodge, Drummond, Phillipsburg, Missoula.   (State-wide maps are also available from their home page).

Location of weather stations (with links to real-time weather sites)

Restoration Planning: This information is potentially useful for monitoring current conditions during a restoration project, for example, to plan an irrigation schedule, or to monitor current river levels.

Data Description   From the NRIS Mapper:  This site shows locations for National Weather Service, Surface Weather Observation Stations and provides links to the real time data.. The National Weather Service provides online, real time data for a variety of surface observation stations in Montana and other parts of the northwest.  Shape files of station locations are also available for download from NRIS Mapper.  Stations in the Upper Clark Fork Basin and the weather station type are listed below. (explanations of the various types of weather stations are provided on these links)

Butte METAR - Weather observation from National Weather Service
Clark Fork above Missoula RIVER - Stage data from the USGS
Deer Lodge AGRIMET - Weather observations from US Bureau of Reclamation
Garrison DOT - Weather observations from Department of Transportation
Warm Springs SNOTEL - Snow telemetry from NRCS

Drought Information

Restoration Planning: This data is potentially useful for monitoring current conditions during a restoration project, or for investigating past conditions at a site.

Data Description  From the NRIS Drought Site: Links to a number of different drought-related data products (indices and maps) from other sources including NRCS, NOAA, USGS, National Drought Mitigation Center, and DNRC.  Coverage is on the state and national level.  Statewide maps from these sites include surface water supply index, monthly percent of normal precipitation, precipitation for water year, daily stream flow conditions, snow water equivalent, stream flow prospect maps. Regional or national scale maps include Palmer drought severity index, current crop moisture index, standardized precipitation index, drought impact, snowpack, and daily stream flow conditions maps.  Monthly water supply reports from Montana DNRC are also available.
