Montana Soils Data
This web page represents a joint effort by the Montana Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Natural
Resource Information System of the Montana State Library. Its
purpose is to provide ready access to the available soil data in Montana.
The data is available in a variety of formats for your ease of use and convenience.
The 1:24,000 scale soil information collected by the NRCS is comprised of 2 data components and one
application component as explained below. These three components comprise
the most current soil information and provide the same types of data
available in the published NRCS soils surveys.
DATA
Soil Survey Geographic (SSURGO)
data: These are the geographic component
(GIS Layers) for each soil survey unit. While soil survey's are
typically conducted by County, the soil survey units do not coincide
with county boundaries in all cases. For each survey area, the polygon
GIS layer is linked to the attribute tables via an attribute called
MUKEY. The GIS data for a survey area may also include a coverage of
line features and another of point features, each of which has their own
set of attributes. A SSURGO "How To Use a Soil Survey?" is
available
here.
National Soil Information System (NASIS)
data: These are Microsoft ŠAccess 97 or Microsoft ŠAccess 2000 database
files containing the attribute data and standardized reports related to the
GIS polygon layer for each soil survey unit. The National NRCS NASIS home page is available
here.
Please check the metadata for database version.
APPLICATIONS
The Soil Data Viewer for ArcView 3.2
- This customized application runs like an Arc View extension and allows various interpretations of
the soil data in report or map format to be displayed. The SDV users guide is available
here.
The Soil Data Viewer 5.1 for ArcMap 9.x
- This customized application runs like an ArcMap extension and allows various interpretations
of the soil data in report or map format to be displayed.
