Downloading Download a file by clicking on the icon, file name, or a location on the index map. If your browser loads the data on the screen instead of asking you where to save the file, go back and click with your RIGHT mouse button and select "Save Link As" (Netscape) or "Save Target As" (Internet Explorer). Your browser should ask you to decide where on your local disk to save the file and let you specify what its name should be. If you are choosing your file by selecting a county or quadrangle from an image map, the default name might be the name of the image map, rather than the name of the file. Change the file name so that it has a .zip extension or .gz extension, depending on what decompression software you will be using.
De-Compression The e00 files can be de-compressed with gzip, WinZip, StuffIt (Macintosh), and other compression programs. Shapefiles can only be de-compressed with programs that recognize multi-file archives. These include WinZip and StuffIt but not gzip.
Software for data viewing/analysis E00 files are designed for use with Arc/Info and ArcView, which are sophisticated Geographic Information Systems (GIS) marketed by ESRI. Other GIS and mapping software sometimes can read e00 files -- consult your software documentation for more information. Shape files are also used by Arc/Info, ArcView, and some other GIS and mapping software. Additionally, you may download ESRI's free Arc Explorer software for viewing Shape files on Windows 95 or NT.
Metadata If you download a shape or e00 file, you will also receive a .doc file that contains the complete FGDC-compatible description of the data set. With the shape files, this is a separate text file. With the e00 files, this is an INFO file. If your software for importing e00 files does not read the .doc section, you can read the e00 file with a text editor and find the word "DOC" to see the metadata. |
